The Irish Wolfhound Research Database came to be in 1995, after an inquiry regarding the ancestors of my second hound. Her breeder knew everything by heart, going back further than I could keep track. After an hour of asking questions, trying to remember who begot whom and who was bred to whom, she said, "Here!" and handed me an old boot box brimming over with pedigrees. I took them home, sorted through them and still couldn't get them straight. In addition, I didn't have enough floor space to put them in some sort of order. But it was too late, I was now a research addict. I purchased a very simplistic pedigree program and began entering animals. Lo and behold, it finally came together. Unfortunately, the program was too simplistic for my ever growing curiosity and needs, so I graduated to a more complex one. The database can now provide pedigrees and research information going back to the 1850's and currently consists of over 78,000 hounds and 20,000 breeders/owners. Approximately 90% of the information is from official registration records from the various countries, which means that this is the most accurate information available. This project has truly been a world wide effort. Irish Wolfhound breeders and fanciers from all over the world have helped to make this database what it is and continue to assist in keeping it as current as possible. There is no way to adequately thank them for their assistance, except to note that this database is available to the worldwide Irish Wolfhound community, now and in the future. Because of their overwhelming generosity, it is a formidable tool to assist breeders in researching past generations when planning future generations. At the request, and with the help of the International Irish Wolfhound community, an extensive reference list is now available listing Irish Wolfhound kennels (past and present), the breeders associated with those kennels and the countries in which they are located.
